Over the past few months I’ve shared some posts on Weight Loss and Diet. I’m wrapping it up this week with the following post and then I’ll have my walking playlist and a Zumba Giveaway! Recently I just tried Barre 3 and I’m excited to share that with you at a later date.
TOP TEN THINGS I’VE LEARNED ABOUT DIETING
1. Men lose weight much faster with much less effort. It’s just the way it is. We need to get over it and stop beating ourselves up when comparing.
2. Accountability to a coach/consultant and a work out partner will make a huge difference in your success
3. Keeping a food journal will allow you to REALLY see what you eat.
4. Make your own sample menus rather than copy directly out of a book. Include what you LIKE and what you will EAT rather than what someone else likes. Include calories, fat, carbs, protein for each choice. Make your list or menu on the weekend before grocery shopping so you will have what you need in the house.
5. There seems to be more and more written about diets every year. Don’t jump on every band wagon. Read with discernment.
6. Listen to your own body and don’t give up even when medical professionals tell you there is nothing wrong.
7. The bottom line: Meat (protein), vegetables and fruit should be the mainstay of our diets. When we stray away from that, we get into trouble. The shelves in our stores are full of temptations.
8. Make meals ahead on the weekend of possible. Also prepare healthy snacks that are easy to grab.
9. What works for your friend will not necessarily work for you!
10. When you gain a few pounds from a special trip, weekend, party etc. Get right back to eating well so that 5 pounds doesn’t turn into 10 and then 15 and then completely get away from you.
This is only ten. What is the best tip you could share?

Karen, I love following your blog. I have a suggestion. Can you change your website so we can read other’s comments? For instance in this blog post you ask for other tips from readers…but we can’t view the comments, only post. Is there something I’m missing? Thanks!
HI Merri,
Thanks so much for reading my blog. You were the first one to comment so there isn’t anything else yet. For past articles, when you go to the post on the home page and click on Comments at the top, you will see all the comments associated with the post. Contact me directly if I’m not explaining this correctly and if you have a further question.
Thanks, Karen!
My best tip is to drink lots of water. I read somewhere that often we think we’re hungry when actually we are thirsty. For those who worry that they will end up in the ladies room all day long, don’t worry. Without going into Too Much Information, my experience has been, once I get used to extra glasses of water, my body kind of regulates itself better. Another thing I’ve learned is to drink hot water in winter. (All those glasses of ice water made me too cold.) A slice of lemon or tiny splash of juice also helps if you don’t like the taste of hot water.
I love the warm lemon water too! Somewhere I seem to think I wrote that and it should have made the TOP 10. Thanks Barb!
Two ideas:
Use smaller plates when serving yourself will keep you from taking so much and you will probably still be full, and
Try to avoid the added chemistry in food. If you don’t have time to cook from scratch, make sure to buy from Freddie’s health food prepared food, etc. (Look for a limited number of ingredients with names that you recognize). The chemistry really messes with your metabolism! I have a friend who was busy and tried one of the commercial diets of prepared food (as seen on TV!) and it was so full of chemicals that she started feeling really bad.
Thanks Sharon! Portion control is a very important point.
Barb mentions water and you commented on it; let’s take it another step. Take 1/2 a fresh lemon and squeeze into a cup of hot water (not warm) hot and drink upon rising. Also eat 1 egg everyday. Studies have shown those who do these two things consistently will lose weight. I always drink a cup of hot lemon water in the morning. Lemon helps cleanse the liver, which helps burn fat. Try to keep boiled eggs in the fridge which makes it easier to eat an egg each day.
Debby Sutherland recently posted..I’m curious Are you in the habit of checking your outfit from all angles before you head out the door Do you use the three way mirror in retail stores
Thanks Debby! I go through my coffee streaks, but hot lemon water in the AM is a good alternative. Debby is exactly right about it cleansing the liver–your fat burning organ. Eggs- I like them in the AM because it’s something that sticks with me for a bit- so agree. I wish these tips had shown weight loss for me personally, but at least I know it’s healthy!
If u are going to eat carbs spread them out all daand get good protein at the same meal to help burn those carbs vs storing them.
for me I personally get rid of larger clothes so I can’t slip back into that size again
Great point Brittani! As our guest blogger, Connie pointed out, protein is so key.
Those that fail to plan, plan to fail. Too true! I have to plan my meals, pack my lunch and be a thinker.
This week started with a wedding on Sunday and also includes two graduations, 4 parties and a funeral. I need to plan to eat fruit before I go and adjust my meals to what might be on the menu. It’s hard to plan for everything but it does help.
Oh, and join an exercise plan with a friend, accountability is everything.

So true Tami. I think one of the hardest things when dieting is when those social events arise and ALL the temptations are there before you. It’s my downfall.
