Weight Loss: Changes I’ve Made

If you are new reader, this is Part 3 in an ongoing series on Weight Loss. I incorporate a post on this every so often to sprinkle it in between all the fashion. When I wrote about my struggle with Insulin Resistance, I did not elaborate on the changes I have made.

Re-reading  my article, I realized I  almost gave the impression that I haven’t made any changes and that I was in complete denial. Then I thought…Wait a minute. I have made many changes! I just still have a long ways to go. If  you feel your body reacts to carbs, you may try some of these suggestions. Many also apply to general health–not just for insulin resistance.

1. I do not eat Pasta. I love it, but it’s a rare occasion. Whole wheat/grain is much better because of higher fiber content, but still carb loaded. I can’t give up potatoes completely, but try to limit now to just a couple of times a week. This is really hard. Mashed potatoes are a comfort food for me.

2. Sweet alcoholic drinks are in my past. I can’t recall the last time I had a margarita. I’ve learned to like a good Bloody Mary. A glass of wine or an occasional beer is a treat now. The best choice by far is NO alcohol.

3. Diet soda is an occasional splurge. I drink sparkling water or club soda with lemon/lime. Sometimes I just crave a diet Coke and give in. Obviously no sugar issue here. I’ve just read SO much about soda and artificial sweeteners that I know it’s time to eliminate that from my diet.

4. Walking is not a tough enough workout for me to see a difference unless I vary the incline (and wouldn’t you know it that capability broke on my treadmill) I need cardio that works up a sweat.

5. No white bread. I cheat occasionally at a restaurant because that bread basket is so darn tempting and my boys love it. How do I tell them NOT to bring it?

6. No fruit juices. I craved orange and grape juice when pregnant and I still love it, but I’ve cut it out completely.

7. One of my favorite breakfasts is plain Cheerios with fresh fruit. Pure carbs. No protein. Not a good choice anymore even if the hype is all about whole grain.

8. I drink hot lemon water. It’s soothing and a natural diuretic. I still love a cup of coffee or a skinny vanilla latte, but I’m trying to keep in natural. It’s great on a cold morning or evening.

9. Increased protein. I use a High protein powder for shakes with Greek yogurt that also has a high protein/low carb count. The yogurt with a touch of fruit mixed in is also a great way to fix a sweet craving.

10. When going out to eat,  I look at the websites for nutrition details to make the best choices.

More Changes I need to Make.

1. Potatoes with evening meal 1-2 times a week only. Ask for more vegetables instead of potatoes in restaurants.

2. Say NO to the chips at a Mexican Restaurant

3.  Sweets & chips that are a weakness cannot be in the house. We now buy BBQ chips or Cool Ranch Doritoes. I don’t like those at all. Teenage snack food for the most part is not appealing to me. However, when my husband buys regular potato chips or frosted sugar cookies at the store I could crown him!

3. I still love milk chocolate over dark chocolate. I really shouldn’t have either.

4. Say NO to dessert. A couple bites only makes me want more.

5. When cooking/baking something for a special event give most of it away. My family doesn’t eat it fast enough and I will.

There you have it. Even implementing a few of these changes might make a big difference for you. Any thing you’ve tried that really has made a difference for you?

Packing My Trip

We leave for Dallas, Texas today. American Airlines charges $25 per bag each way. My husband and son decided they would rent golf clubs this time. I decided that yes I could get everything in a carry-on size suitcase. I have helped a number of clients Pack their Trip. I need to practice what I preach. It’s a 5 day trip-certainly doable. My To-Do List:

1. Get the 5 or 7 day forecast.

2. Make sure all clothes are clean before you begin packing. If possible, try each thing on before packing especially if you have never worn it together.

3. Lay out each outfit including accessories. Then put directly in suitcase. If possible, try to carve out time where you will not be interrupted and lose your train of thought. This is how things get forgotten and don’t make the suitcase.

I have a bit of a challenge with the temperature. A cold front is coming through so the variance in temperature: 70-45 with night time temperatures as low as 33. I went with a brown “capsule” adding in purple. Challenge #2: We will be taking a family photo with a black color scheme. This meant another pair of shoes I wasn’t figuring on. Why not use all those gray combinations I just wrote about? Most were too warm and bulky in the suitcase. I’ve written and pictured what I have planned. (I did not photograph black sweats and an extra white blouse I threw in just in case the color scheme for the family photo switches back to white! More on color coordinating for family photos in another post.)

I took 2 pairs of jeans (straight cut and boot cut) 2 solid tops, 4 printed tops, 1 vest, 3 long cardigans, 2 scarves, leather jacket, two pairs of shoes, 1 pair of booties, sweats, blouse. This includes what was worn on the plane.

Day 1: Travel Day. I debated about taking the dark brown leather jacket but decided it was a good choice for evenings when I’m there. I’ll wear that and the black booties (heel for photo) on the plane to save room. I’m always cold on the plane. Scarf should help. **Change of plans since photo–going with oxford shoes since I had room in my suitcase for boots.

Day 2: We’ll be visiting my son at college and shopping. There will be lots of walking. Thank goodness for these shoes (taupe) that are such a great neutral they go with everything. I’ll be writing about them soon–pure comfort! I have two options depending on the weather. The first day forecast is 70 so the second options has a sleeveless top. Same shoes. Whichever outfit I don’t choose will be worn another day.

Day 3: I’ll  need two outfits–family photo later in the day. I can just throw on the top I wore Day 1 for a short time with a necklace or scarf if I go out. If we stay at home, I’ll just put on sweatpants and jacket. The outfit for the photo is my black wrap worn like a jacket which you saw in the two posts on Gray. I can’t decide on jewelry so luckily that’s easy to pack. The silver helps brighten the black, but not sure how much is too much in the photo. Bootie (shown for Day 1) Heel–extra height is very important in photos when you’re 5’4.

Day4: Thanksgiving. I’m not sure if we will attend church, but this will work for the whole day. Option #2 if I want to be more comfortable/warmer in the evening.

Day 5: I’m not sure what we’re doing day or evening. It gets colder late in the week. Either can be worn with leather jacket or one with chocolate lightweight cardigan.

Day 6: Travel Day but we leave later in the day. I’ll wear whatever wasn’t chosen previously.

Here is the suitcase with all the outfits and my jewelry packing. There is still plenty of room for my hair dryer and flat iron. My one allowed bag of liquids is going in my “personal item” carry-on.  One makeup bag is going in my son’s “checked” bag as there are some liquid/non-liquids. In the end we decided to check ONE bag in case we bought something. And then there were the golf shoes that needed to fit…My college son also requested a few items. I’m quite proud of myself for the  consolidation. I still have options. I think you can see that I could have gotten by with even a little less.

Since the rules on liquids went into effect, I have always checked a bag. I just didn’t want to deal with it. Any comments? How do all of you fit hair care products, skin products and liquid makeup products into ONE quart size ziploc even when they’re small? Do I have too many products?

The Life (and Dress) of a Sports Mom

My boys have been involved in organized sports for twelve years. My husband was a coach for a number of those years. I know that many readers will be able to relate to all that is involved in this aspect of life–the good, the bad and the ugly! Allow me to take off my “stylist hat” for a few paragraphs. It will all come back to fashion with a couple of outfit layouts in upcoming posts.

I have no regrets about our involvement in club sports/school sports. The kids have learned some valuable life lessons that only this type of experience can teach. Between two boys it’s been soccer, football, basketball, baseball, and golf. And one even tried wrestling…We and they have been around. The upside? You meet some great people. The downside? A certain segment of that parent population take it all a little too seriously. Oh, the stories I could tell. I’ve always had a secret ambition to write, “True Short Stories of a Sports Mom”. It would be most entertaining. I would have to change names or move away. It would have made the perfect blog back in the day when most people, myself included, had never heard of a blog.

You see, my children are average to above average athletes. My husband and I have been very mindful of this from Day 1. My kids have played with some talented athletes–local “stars”. Mixed in were those who THOUGHT their kids were stars. I’ve sat and listened to parents boasting. I’ve smiled, shook my head, and bit my tongue. As a sports family, we’ve been involved in some unbelievable situations.

It came full circle this fall when my college freshman chose to write an English paper about one of those experiences. Oh how interesting it was as a parent to read this perspective six years later! Of course it brought out a sports mom “instinct” that is difficult to describe in words. Can I tell you how many e-mails I wrote or conversations with coaches I formulated in my mind? Most were never sent and most of the time I sat back, muttered to myself or a friend and walked away.

I could handle the fact that parents were probably talking about my kids/husband behind my back. What I couldn’t handle were things being said when I was sitting on the bleachers. A few of my comebacks still make the family ”Remember when” stories…

Back in September when I featured Barbara Hill Photography, I mentioned golf photos. Several of you asked me off/on the blog to send them. I love to show off the work and promote those who have agreed to be featured on Style by Karen. It’s a rainy day in the Northwest; I enjoyed looking at these again.

High School Golf is not a “Glory” sport. It does not get the same press as Football and Basketball or even Soccer. You have to dig in the local paper to find golf. Although I don’t play myself (believe me, they’ve tried) I so appreciate what this game has taught my kids. Golf is a game of ups and downs. My kids have had their share of each. Despite team and All League awards, a trip to state, an occasional mention in the paper, they will probably not be remembered as the top local golfers.

At one match this year, my husband was approached by a coach from an opposing school. He wanted to confirm if he was the dad of Ethan, our oldest. The coach complimented our son (who graduated) not only on his play, but his sportsmanship, demeanor and the gentleman he was off/on the course. To us, that was an achievement that far outweighs local press and awards.

Back to fashion: I’ve sat  frozen through so many events. I’m eager to share some finds that will help you stay warm, not look too dressed up, yet stylish as a sports mom!

Miscellaneous Monday

It’s been a crazy week, but I’m back to blogging! First and foremost, I realized I forgot to announce the winner on last Wednesday’s post for TREATS. Congratulations to Comment #8-Linda. Thanks for all your comments and please follow Eva on Facebook to get notices about her Happy Hour shopping times. She recently posted her fall hours.

Today is a short post to prepare for back-back posts on BOOTS and BOOTIES. Look for a series all week with lots of photos.

I realized after one faithful reader asked, Should it Stay or Should it Go did not address the issue of hanging onto clothes that do not fit. I’m honestly not sure how I could have forgotten such an important aspect!

Here is my suggestion: It is perfectly fine to hang on to a few favorites especially if you are within 1-2 sizes of these pieces. I tell clients to put these clothes in a “too small” category and revisit it. I actually think it can be motivating to see this category in your closet on a regular basis. Have I hung onto things–YES! Especially if I paid a good price for them or knew they would fit again. Sometimes it has worked. Admittedly, I recall not that long ago, finally getting rid of a pair of white jeans I picked up on sale in smaller size. My hope was to fit in them again and it just never happened. It was the perfect thing to consign.

Style by Karen is on Facebook. Several months ago I promised Fab Finds every Friday. My hope was to show photos of recent finds from various stores. I kept it going for a bit and then I tended to forget. My goal is to feature a different store occasionally. I hope it will encourage you to venture out to new places. Stores like Talbot’s have dramatically changed their look. A few others are following suit. My Facebook page will always feature my most recent blog post. I’m also going to be offering specials and promos from the business partners I have established–those who have participated in Giveaways.

If you are not a “fan” on my Style by Karen page, click HERE to join. Scroll down to the bottom LEFT HAND margin to find the LIKE button. My 200th fan will receive this special gift–a beautiful pendant from lia Sophia Jewelry. (Attached to chocolate brown cord but can be interchanged with any color of cord or chain)

If you have already “liked” Style by Karen on Facebook, do something nice today and send a friend this post or the link on Facebook.

Friday Fab Finds on Facebook!

If you haven’t joined my Fan Page on Facebook you’ll want to! Click HERE to go directly to the page. Then just click on the thumbs up “like” at the far right of the page under my logo and you will receive my feeds. In addition to my blog posts coming through, each Friday you’ll discover my Friday Fab Finds! I post photos only of my recent finds from various stores. Today it is SALE boots from Zappos. Don’t miss it! I only put this on Facebook, not the blog, so be sure and join.

Then on May 31 I will be drawing the name of one of my lucky FB fans to receive a Style by Karen gift certificate good for TWO hours of any service. The winner can be local or long distance. You can also invite friends to join my page. Ok, it’s fine to wait until after the drawing to do that! Thank you for helping get my blog out there!

Happy May Day

It’s May 1, May Day, the night of my son’s Sr. Prom and for me personally it marks SIX months of blogging! A big thanks to all of you faithful and new readers. My goal from the beginning was to write with a fresh perspective that set me apart from other fashion bloggers. Recently a reader told me just that. She said, “I haven’t seen anything out there like it. I love your blog because I read the articles and think to myself. Oh, someone else feels that way too!” I’ve had positive comments about content and information. THANK YOU. My goal is to reach the fashion challenged and fashionistas of all ages with helpful information. This article will highlight some of the things I have planned for the blog the next six months.

What about the purse post I promised: Handbags Part 2? In the last few days I’ve received a couple of e-mails and have been brainstorming myself. I am going to take another direction for Part 2 highlighting different styles that will coordinate with a Giveaway. Stay tuned… so much more to come on.

I’ve learned that many of you reading are somewhat new to the world of blogging. Here are a couple reminders that may help:

1. Subscribe by filling out the box on the home page. You will then be sent an e-mail that verifies that you want the articles sent to your e-mail. Many subscribers have never clicked to verify. This is required for it to come to your inbox.

2. If you are still interested in the information, but do not want more e-mail, consider putting it in your “favorites” or catching the posts on Facebook. I keep the articles 400-600 words. It is a quick read with photos. Sometimes it may be a touch longer, but I am very aware of busy lives and full in boxes!

3. I love the comments and so do readers. Your question may help another reader so don’t be timid about leaving a comment. Your first name is all that is required. You can also send me a note directly.

Starting this month, I will continue to post articles twice a week. In addition I will write  announcements (sales or specials) and post photos ONLY one time a week on my Facebook page. The photos will be of some of my recent finds. If you are on Facebook, please enter Style by Karen in the search box to view the page.(you do not have to be ‘friends” with me) Instead of becoming a fan, you now “like” the page and you will receive the feeds. You can also suggest my page to your friends. I’m going to offer a drawing for Style by Karen Gift Certificate the end of May. All my Facebook fans (local and long distance) will automatically be entered–no comment required. Yes, we can do some of my services virtually!

Do you have a topic you would like me to cover? I have pages of ideas. Recently a reader asked if I would cover bathing suits for body types. It’s on the list! This week I also received great hand bag tips. Keep it coming. I love your feedback.

If you own or know a business owner who may want to be featured, please contact me. Speaking of contacts, evidently there were some “technical difficulties” with my contact form. Some messages were not getting to me. If you try and DO not hear back, please know that it did not go through. Try to comment directly on a post. Your e-mail is posted on my personal page and I can contact you. I answer all correspondence promptly.

And last, readers have requested photo layouts of complete outfits. There are many fashion blogs that feature this as their main focus. However I’m better at writing and do not have a graphic design background. I like to give a good mix of content and photos. Now I’ve found a source that will allow me to create these type of layouts. I’m experimenting and hope to have it ready soon. Thanks again for reading and referring your friends!

New Year Greetings

Happy New Year! Thank you for your support and interest in my blog. I’m very excited to share even more with you this coming year. While I have a list of ideas, I always welcome your suggestions. Some of you have e-mailed me directly and others have commented on topics you would like me to address. Please feel free to do this anytime.

I thought I had it all planned.  Two posts written to reach you while I was away. Another ready to go on Christmas Day accompanied with a family photo. It didn’t quite work out the way I envisioned… One of our family traditions is attending our candlelight Christmas Eve Service. This year we were asked to read and light the advent candle. I had planned for a picture either at home before we left, or at church. It was color coordinated in shades of blue to match the tree decor at church. I was excited to get this “perfect” photo because it’s not every day everyone is dressed and somewhat cooperative. (teenage boys do not like being photographed or dressing up) Long story short–no photo. My last resort was a photo at our Christmas Eve party in more casual clothes which turned out OK, but needed editing. The post just didn’t happen before leaving for Hawaii on Christmas Day. Below is the photo that was supposed to say Merry Christmas!

It is now a New Year. Our vacation was spent in Maui and we all had a wonderful time. Our first night, the sun went down and became an “orange ball” in the sky. It was an amazing sight and I soon was obsessed with getting sunset photos. This is not an easy task: Timing (the sun can set quickly) blowing hair, finding someone to take the photo, and photographing directly into the sun were all factors that complicated the situation. Although there are  flaws, (perhaps the scenic one is the best) enjoy the beautiful sunset photos. I wish you all the best in 2010. May the coming year be  full of blessings for you and your family.
