I met Barb through our Women’s Entrepreneur Group. She photographs many kids and families; I knew she would be the perfect fit for my project. Weeks after she agreed, I e-mailed her in a bit of desperation. My oldest was leaving for college. Some time ago my husband requested a photo shoot of our two boys and himself on the golf course. (I do not golf) Somehow in the busyness of life that never happened. Barb fit us in, working around our schedule which was crazy mid-August.

We whisked her off in the golf cart, the golfers explained what they wanted, and in a short time she had captured their love for the game. All while putting up with my husband’s sense of humor, teenagers who were polite but really didn’t have “time” for this, not to mention a tight squeeze in the golf cart! Describing this scene should convey to you that Barb is a pleasure to work with. She has quite a witty sense of humor herself. She is creative, energetic and related well to the kids. My son said, “She made picture taking fun, not a hassle!”

As for that golf photo? Well my indecisiveness caused me to miss my own deadline. I can’t make up my mind on what to choose!

In recent posts I’ve mentioned that mixing metals is a current trend. Ironically, I’ve been mixing silver and gold for years. I’ve always loved 2-tone jewelry and bought my first watch with silver/gold in the nineties. I recall looking high and low for a two tone setting for my diamond in the Caribbean 8 years ago—hard to find! I succumbed to trends several years ago when I had my diamonds reset for a 20^thanniversary. I went with complete white gold as it fit the vintage look I was trying to create. At times I miss my gold/silver combo.

I still standby the “rule” that gold looks better with warm tones and silver with cool tones. I wear both. I like to mix it. This season you’ll see gold silver and copper. Can’t wait to start mixing that and any other metals. Love these 2-tone pieces from Silpada.

 Silpada is known for mixing silver, colored gemstones, and pearls. It adds texture and interest. The multi-stone look is one I love because I believe it increases the versatility of the piece tenfold. It also keeps away that “matchy-matchy” look in jewelry when your necklace, earrings and bracelet all match. Believe me, I have had my share of sets over the years. Instead, try to blend rather than match. It really adds interest to any jewelry combinations. I like to pick out one of the stones that is least dominant and find coordinating pieces to pick that up. If you like your pieces to match exactly I will be the last person to criticize. I just applaud you for wearing jewelry in the first place and adding interest and color to your outfit! Below are some great Silpada examples with multi stones.

Hopefully now you can see the possibilities. Above in VIEW #1 you can look for a necklace that has a pearls to go with these earrings. Look at all the versatility in VIEW #2. And for the last set of earrings you could pick out a necklace that would coordinate with the cubic zirconia. Now think the other way around and take a look at some necklaces and think what you could do with earrings.

When I first walked into the store a couple of years ago, two things struck me: 1.The price point was very reasonable. There were some higher end bags and clothing, but also things I could easily afford. 2.There were styles for every age group. How often do you see that in a small store? For this post, I will let the pictures do the talking. Hats off to store owner, Sandra Koceja and former owner/present employee, Rhonda Ackman for their great sense of style and keen eye for what women love. Rhonda and Sandra tag team at market to find some unique pieces.

Accentuate celebrates six years this summer. There on the shelves were all the brands I love: Sofft, Fidji, Pikolinos, Eric Michael, Hispanitas, Born and others that were new to me. There are selections that are a touch more dressy, and others very casual. At first glance from the website, you may find a different look– “edgier” styles that may not be your personal taste. I encourage you to glance at the website, but visit the store. There is so much more inside that can’t be featured on the site. You will also note that they carry men’s shoes, jewelry and handbags!

Owner, Liz Page is very knowledgable. She knows her stuff. I had such an enjoyable time talking shoes with her and sharing my opinions on different brands. Having a narrow foot herself, she totally can relate to all of you with those type of fit issues. However, even with my opposite problem she understood immediately and is very sensitive to each customer’s needs. When something didn’t work for me, she was very patient (and one has to be with my foot) and persistent to find the right solution. I love the great customer service and personal attention that a shop like Amenity shoes provides.

I am a native Michigander who was raised in the small town of Saline, just outside Ann Arbor. When I graduated high school, I moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University. View #2 I LOVE a coral and turquoise combo. Above the scarf is just wrapped around the ruffled cap-sleeve tee to show as a “wrap” if you wanted to cover bare arms in the summer when you go from warm to very cool places. The turquoise capris hanging behind combined with white would be a fine combo. Add the coral and it becomes a different outfit. You could also put a coral piece of jewelry with this outfit. Trust me, coral and turquoise are a hot combination for summer and you’re sure to get compliments.

 View #4 You really don’t need a scarf with this print and detail. Sometimes when women are not used to wearing prints, a solid “tones” it down. You really need scarves with prints AND solids in your closet. This view sets up #5where I showed the same top with a jacket. Also note the length of the Kika scarf. It can be wrapped around your neck twice. I twisted and wrapped to get this “scrunchy” look. This jacket and top are from my own closet (Cabi outlet and Anthropologie sale rack) While there is enough going on in the outfit, I’d throw in the scarf if I was out & about. NW wind and rain can come up out of nowhere and without a scarf, I’d be freezing.

If you’ve never consigned your clothes, this article may give you a different perspective. When I work with a client in the closet editing phase we form three piles: Consign, Donate, Throw Out. Although all stores are different, I feel I have a pretty good eye on what is consign-able, and I try to guide a new consignor in that direction. Why Consign? It’s smart , it’s green and will stretch your clothing dollars. Spend a few minutes on the Internet researching stores in your area. There may be a little trial/error. Here are a few tips if you are new to consignment.

1. Before visiting a store, make a few phone calls or visit websites. I like to know if the staff stays current and visits departments stores/boutiques frequently. It’s also important to know if the store’s clientele will be a match for your clothing. Find out about their typical customer (age & profession) You want your clothes to sell! I’ve consigned at two different stores over the years but one is a better fit for my clothes, another for my kids’ clothes.

2. Carefully examine your items for stains, tears and holes. A little TLC goes a long way in presentation. Take the time to press the garment and remove excess “pilling” with a sweater shaver. Generally 2 years old is a good rule of thumb. I typically wear my clothes 3-4 years and still am able to consign many pieces because they are classic pieces in good condition.

3. If your items are turned down, do not take it personally! Politely ask why the items were not taken; this will help for future visits. Many times the store owner is using past sales as a guide. Remember she is trying to move the clothes. Full racks do not help her turn a profit. Almost always my clothes are accepted. I know what they are looking for and my items sell. Soon you too can be an expert consignor! Check out this site for some great tips. I only scratched the surface!

I visited Here We Go Again at their two Portland locations and found great clothing at both stores. It seemed like their consignors were bringing in items that I would buy in the store today. The detailed website has everything you need to know about consigning there! Upon visiting the Broadway store, I met Chris, the owner. It didn’t take long to learn that she is passionate about consignment, a smart, experienced businesswoman and I’m excited to give Here We Go Again a Style by Karen stamp of approval!  Chris is generously donating TWO $25 gift certificates–one at each location. I found these bags in the fall of 2008 when a friend from California was visiting. The bag was her carry-on, and simply her “everything” bag. I just had to have one. She was having a party the following month, and I became the proud owner of my first Gigi Hill bag. My First Reaction: Where were these bags when I was hauling all the gear to soccer and baseball games? For years I trudged to those games with cheap bags that lasted maybe a season. I toted an umbrella, blankets, sweatshirts, coats, water, snacks and more. I needed a place for keys, wallet, sunglasses (yes, sometimes we had a few rays during a game) and all those things were buried at the bottom of the bag. Turns out, Gigi Hill was started by two women with the soccer mom in mind! Many of the fabrics are oil cloth which is completely waterproof–perfect in a rainy climate. I could never do justice describing these bags in writing. Explaining all the pockets and features are shown in videos on the website. There is a video demo for each bag!

How do I use these bags now? Let me count the ways!

-The Audrey is my favorite versatile tote which I bring to all my styling appointments. Everything fits in perfectly with pockets for the small things like pens, calculator, tape measure. It’s always packed and ready to go.

-The Sophia becomes an over-sized purse when I need to carry a larger notebook or folders. If I don’t want to carry both a bag and a purse this is the perfect choice. It also holds a laptop.

-Back to the Audrey. We recently took a trip to Maui. I used this bag for my carry on and then it served as a beach bag. The original style had a canvas fabric on the inside. I came home with a bit of sand stuck to the fabric. Now the Audrey can be purchased with the oil cloth on the inside and outside! This is great for the beach or pool. After Hawaii I added it to my collection along with the Scarlett which is perfect to hold your sunscreen bottles or a wet bathing suit. The original Audrey? The sand is vacuumed away; I use it as described above.

-The Katharine: Book bag, large lunch bag, or pool bag for I-pod, magazines, sunglasses etc.

I’m also very impressed with the versatility of the messenger bag called the Carol, one of the newer designs I haven’t seen. There really is a bag for every purpose–for new moms, soccer moms or the seasoned traveler! I get comments on these bags wherever I go; they catch women’s attention because they are unique and stylish.

Do you like what you see? Have a show. Your first reaction may be… I can’t afford high end clothes in small boutiques. I encourage you again to think of COST PER WEAR. Most likely your whole wardrobe cannot come from boutiques. Look for unique, quality, classic pieces that are going to be worn again/again. Add your name to the mailing list so you will hear about promotions and sales.You can also plan an “after hours” shopping event and receive shopping credit. I did this in November for my clients and friends. We had the whole store to ourselves and had a great time.

Quite honestly, customer service means a great deal to me and is worth a higher price. I like it when everyone knows my name (quite a feat with my last name). They know I can’t purchase something every time I pop in, but are quick to show me what is new without pressure to buy. If you are too busy to shop and are looking for certain items, they will call you when something comes in. Even if Camas is not in your backyard, it’s worth grabbing a few friends and making the drive. Be sure and tell them I sent you.
