Accentuate Boutique Giveaway Part 2
by Karen on July 22, 2010
in Accessories, Fashion trends, Giveaways
If you did not have a chance to make a comment on Part 1, there is still time! The Gift Certificate will be waiting at the counter with the winner’s name. While it might be fun to check out Camas this weekend, it will be good for six months. Check out the Accentuate page on Facebook to stay updated on new arrivals.
When I first walked into the store a couple of years ago, two things struck me: 1.The price point was very reasonable. There were some higher end bags and clothing, but also things I could easily afford. 2.There were styles for every age group. How often do you see that in a small store? For this post, I will let the pictures do the talking. Hats off to store owner, Sandra Koceja and former owner/present employee, Rhonda Ackman for their great sense of style and keen eye for what women love. Rhonda and Sandra tag team at market to find some unique pieces.
Accentuate specializes in tops for a special occasion. In our area, Vegas is a popular destination. Any of these combinations could also be worn for a fun night out locally.
A little more dressy..
Dresses: Something for a wedding and some a bit more casual.
Career Wear (Department stores have even stopped carrying many options for women who need a tailored look in the workplace)
Casual Tops
Jewelry! A full selection of Brighton pieces including charms (sorry, no photo) and unique designs such as Holly Yashi and Jazzola. Accentuate is one of the only stores to carry Brighton in Clark County.
Denim Bar: Joes, David Kahn, AG, Mavi, Jag, Kut from the Kloth and Worn. You can find a pair of jeans at Accentuate for $69.
I asked two employees to pick something they loved from the store and be my models. I wanted to further emphasize that there would be some things teenagers would like and be able to afford at Accentuate.
Savannah Cooper will be a Senior at Camas High School in the fall.
Angela Kern will be a Freshman at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. A big thanks to both girls for modeling.
What caught your eye? Remember to post a comment (deadline extended to July 23 @ 7am PST) and you’ll automatically be entered for the Giveaway. And if you haven’t “read between the lines” I am also employed at Accentuate. Come and see me and I will help you put together a look you will love. I am sure I can help you find the perfect fit in denim.

Amenity Shoes Giveaway
by Karen on June 14, 2010
in Fabulous Footwear, Giveaways
It’s not every day you “stumble” upon a store like Amenity Shoes. Last fall I found a quality shoe store in the Beaumont District of Portland. I love finding places off the beaten path and Amenity is just that. Always on the hunt for comfort/stylish shoes, I was surprised to find such a large selection of fun shoes. For me it’s about a 15 minute drive across the bridge at 3430 NE 41st Avenue, Portland, Oregon. www.amenityshoes.com and on Facebook (Click on the link to “like” and become a fan to receive updates.)
There on the shelves were all the brands I love: Sofft, Fidji, Pikolinos, Eric Michael, Hispanitas, Born and others that were new to me. There are selections that are a touch more dressy, and others very casual. At first glance from the website, you may find a different look– “edgier” styles that may not be your personal taste. I encourage you to glance at the website, but visit the store. There is so much more inside that can’t be featured on the site. You will also note that they carry men’s shoes, jewelry and handbags!
Owner, Liz Page is very knowledgable. She knows her stuff. I had such an enjoyable time talking shoes with her and sharing my opinions on different brands. Having a narrow foot herself, she totally can relate to all of you with those type of fit issues. However, even with my opposite problem she understood immediately and is very sensitive to each customer’s needs. When something didn’t work for me, she was very patient (and one has to be with my foot) and persistent to find the right solution. I love the great customer service and personal attention that a shop like Amenity shoes provides.
Liz loved the blog, was eager to partner with Style by Karen and do a Giveaway. I couldn’t be happier to promote such a fine business!
Now, here is the best part. This week is their Anniversary Sale and select styles will be on Sale–15-40% off through June 18th! And one lucky Style by Karen reader will win a $30 Gift certificate! Make a comment and you will be entered! First take a quick peek at some of the styles Liz sent in recent photos:
And two pairs I found at the store in recent months:
Fidji pair–softest leather I’ve ever worn. They are made in Portugal. Pikolinos: Conformed to my wide foot perfectly. Go visit the store this week and tell them I sent you!
Post your comment by Wednesday @ 9 pm PST to be eligible for the drawing.
KikaPaprika Scarf Giveaway
by Karen on May 29, 2010
in Accessories, Giveaways
I love finding new companies to promote on my blog! This Giveaway introduces an organic clothing company out of California: kikaPaprika.Meet Ruth Cekola and learn a little about this awesome company and opportunity!
I am a native Michigander who was raised in the small town of Saline, just outside Ann Arbor. When I graduated high school, I moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University. A mutual friend introduced me to a fabulous man who became my husband seven years later. Tony grew up in a large family in Kalamazoo and my family is still nearby, so we have stayed in the area. We have a daughter, Victoria, who is a huge blessing in our lives. We enjoy spending time with family, friends and one of my favorite hobbies is scrapbooking.
I am a naturally organized person, so I started my own organizing business a few years ago while I was working as a full time Chiropractic Assistant. My organizational skills are now being utilized with my husband’s home based business as an office manager/accountant. Working with Tony afforded me the opportunity to join kikaPaprika as a premier launch consultant in August 2008.
I am passionate about our company and mission of helping women dress in comfort AND style! It has been so rewarding to see how kikaPaprika has changed the way women view themselves by dressing in styles that are flattering and feel amazingly soft. Our MADE IN THE USA company is unique in many ways: We bring the shopping experience into the comfort of your own home, we only use organic fabrics and eco-friendly dyes and we offer custom coloring of your favorite garments. I enjoy talking to women in all states about bringing kikaPaprika to their area, especially right now because we are accepting applications for our fall season.
And now, on to the Giveaway! If you read Scarves of Summer I know you’ll agree that there really isn’t a time you can’t use a scarf! Ruth is giving away a beautiful, soft coral scarf from kikaPaprika. I chose coral because it coordinates with so many colors. Sometimes women are fearful of corals because they see it as orange. I believe it can brighten up your whole appearance very quickly. The organic cotton fabric is “oh so soft” you may just want to wrap it around your neck this summer despite the heat! The lightweight cotton however is not going to add a lot of bulk making it the perfect summer scarf!
This scarf sells for $25 and comes in a variety of colors. 100% of proceeds help women in shelters near their LA warehouse. Kika Cares! They gave back to the community by donating the sales of a different LTD item each season. You may want to grab one while you can. AND you’ll be helping someone less fortunate.
View #1: Coral is a great complement to Navy Blue. It’s paired with a very casual jacket that can be worn with jeans or sweat pants and a patterned tank. The solid scarf pulls the coral from the top and makes a typical casual outfit look a little more fun!
View #2 I LOVE a coral and turquoise combo. Above the scarf is just wrapped around the ruffled cap-sleeve tee to show as a “wrap” if you wanted to cover bare arms in the summer when you go from warm to very cool places. The turquoise capris hanging behind combined with white would be a fine combo. Add the coral and it becomes a different outfit. You could also put a coral piece of jewelry with this outfit. Trust me, coral and turquoise are a hot combination for summer and you’re sure to get compliments.
View #3 The strapless small print dress is just begging for the Kika coral scarf!
View #4 You really don’t need a scarf with this print and detail. Sometimes when women are not used to wearing prints, a solid “tones” it down. You really need scarves with prints AND solids in your closet. This view sets up #5where I showed the same top with a jacket. Also note the length of the Kika scarf. It can be wrapped around your neck twice. I twisted and wrapped to get this “scrunchy” look. This jacket and top are from my own closet (Cabi outlet and Anthropologie sale rack) While there is enough going on in the outfit, I’d throw in the scarf if I was out & about. NW wind and rain can come up out of nowhere and without a scarf, I’d be freezing.
Here are few more ideas for you… Thanks Ruth for sharing.
Would you like to win? Post a comment and you will automatically be entered.
Contest ends Wednesday, June 2: 9 AM PST.
See more about kikaPaprika on Ruth’s site Once you contact Ruth, she will connect you to her Facebook page where you will see more photos which makes long distance shopping a breeze. If you are a Michigan reader, give Ruth a call!
(Other clothing & accessories featured above are from Accentuate,a unique boutique located at 500 NE 4th Ave in Camas, WA They will be featured in a upcoming post)
Here We Go Again Giveaway
by Karen on May 4, 2010
in Giveaways, Shop on a Budget
I’ve consigned my clothes for 20 years. Until recently I’ve never purchased a thing at a consignment store. I’m not sure why. Perhaps I was always in a hurry to drop off clothes. A quick glance through the racks told me that they were full of some of the same styles I was bringing into the store. I’ve been content to be a consignor; I love picking up that check. Writing this blog has caused me to venture out and explore. In a previous post I encouraged you to get out of your shopping rut and try different stores. I’ve done the same thing the last months and it has been fun!
If you’ve never consigned your clothes, this article may give you a different perspective. When I work with a client in the closet editing phase we form three piles: Consign, Donate, Throw Out. Although all stores are different, I feel I have a pretty good eye on what is consign-able, and I try to guide a new consignor in that direction. Why Consign? It’s smart , it’s green and will stretch your clothing dollars. Spend a few minutes on the Internet researching stores in your area. There may be a little trial/error. Here are a few tips if you are new to consignment.
1. Before visiting a store, make a few phone calls or visit websites. I like to know if the staff stays current and visits departments stores/boutiques frequently. It’s also important to know if the store’s clientele will be a match for your clothing. Find out about their typical customer (age & profession) You want your clothes to sell! I’ve consigned at two different stores over the years but one is a better fit for my clothes, another for my kids’ clothes.
2. Carefully examine your items for stains, tears and holes. A little TLC goes a long way in presentation. Take the time to press the garment and remove excess “pilling” with a sweater shaver. Generally 2 years old is a good rule of thumb. I typically wear my clothes 3-4 years and still am able to consign many pieces because they are classic pieces in good condition.
3. If your items are turned down, do not take it personally! Politely ask why the items were not taken; this will help for future visits. Many times the store owner is using past sales as a guide. Remember she is trying to move the clothes. Full racks do not help her turn a profit. Almost always my clothes are accepted. I know what they are looking for and my items sell. Soon you too can be an expert consignor! Check out this site for some great tips. I only scratched the surface!
I visited Here We Go Again at their two Portland locations and found great clothing at both stores. It seemed like their consignors were bringing in items that I would buy in the store today. The detailed website has everything you need to know about consigning there! Upon visiting the Broadway store, I met Chris, the owner. It didn’t take long to learn that she is passionate about consignment, a smart, experienced businesswoman and I’m excited to give Here We Go Again a Style by Karen stamp of approval! Chris is generously donating TWO $25 gift certificates–one at each location. Yes, that means two winners!
You can also find them on Facebook. When you “like” you’ll receive feeds on recent items that have come in. Take a virtual step inside HGWA:
Now take a peek at my finds! View #1 Brown wrap/shrug to go over sleeveless dresses and tops: $35. View#2 Paige cropped jeans: $60 This is one of my favorite brands that would sell for $150+ in the stores. View #3 Blue sleeveless top with ruching: $25. The day I shopped, I received a promo for 20% off my highest item. What a deal!
What do you think? Are you a regular consignor and/or frequent local shops? If not, will you give it a try? If this article comes to your e-mail, click on the title and it will take you to my site. Click on comments at the top right corner of the post. It will say “share your thoughts” until someone comments. A comment of any length enters you in the drawing which will take place on Saturday, May 8th 9 am PST.
Gigi Hill Giveaway
by Karen on April 22, 2010
in Accessories, Giveaways
You are lucky readers–another Giveaway! I am happy to introduce a home business that may be new to you: Gigi Hill bags. In addition I’m excited to personally introduce Brenda Jones, a Founding Sr. Style Leader from Forest Grove, Oregon.
Read more about Brenda and visit her personal site.
I found these bags in the fall of 2008 when a friend from California was visiting. The bag was her carry-on, and simply her “everything” bag. I just had to have one. She was having a party the following month, and I became the proud owner of my first Gigi Hill bag. My First Reaction: Where were these bags when I was hauling all the gear to soccer and baseball games? For years I trudged to those games with cheap bags that lasted maybe a season. I toted an umbrella, blankets, sweatshirts, coats, water, snacks and more. I needed a place for keys, wallet, sunglasses (yes, sometimes we had a few rays during a game) and all those things were buried at the bottom of the bag. Turns out, Gigi Hill was started by two women with the soccer mom in mind! Many of the fabrics are oil cloth which is completely waterproof–perfect in a rainy climate. I could never do justice describing these bags in writing. Explaining all the pockets and features are shown in videos on the website. There is a video demo for each bag!
How do I use these bags now? Let me count the ways!
-The Audrey is my favorite versatile tote which I bring to all my styling appointments. Everything fits in perfectly with pockets for the small things like pens, calculator, tape measure. It’s always packed and ready to go.
-The Sophia becomes an over-sized purse when I need to carry a larger notebook or folders. If I don’t want to carry both a bag and a purse this is the perfect choice. It also holds a laptop.
-Back to the Audrey. We recently took a trip to Maui. I used this bag for my carry on and then it served as a beach bag. The original style had a canvas fabric on the inside. I came home with a bit of sand stuck to the fabric. Now the Audrey can be purchased with the oil cloth on the inside and outside! This is great for the beach or pool. After Hawaii I added it to my collection along with the Scarlett which is perfect to hold your sunscreen bottles or a wet bathing suit. The original Audrey? The sand is vacuumed away; I use it as described above.
-The Katharine: Book bag, large lunch bag, or pool bag for I-pod, magazines, sunglasses etc.
I’m also very impressed with the versatility of the messenger bag called the Carol, one of the newer designs I haven’t seen. There really is a bag for every purpose–for new moms, soccer moms or the seasoned traveler! I get comments on these bags wherever I go; they catch women’s attention because they are unique and stylish.
Do you like what you see? Have a show. Brenda is happy to travel to the Portland/Vancouver area. If you are long distance, you may be unsure about ordering without seeing and feeling; do NOT hesitate. I know you will be very happy with your purchase. Study the website, ask Brenda questions, and then order. You will have a well made, useful product for years to come! If you are looking for a way to work from home–this might be the right fit for you. I love recommending home-based businesses to women who are looking for something different.
On to the Giveaway! Brenda is giving away a case for sunglasses: the Jackie. Fabric: Dynasty.
Any comment enters you in the drawing. Contest ends Monday, April 26th at 9 AM PST
Lily Atelier Giveaway
I love boutiques! Don’t get me wrong–I do plenty of “damage” in larger stores and discount stores, but there is nothing better than getting to know everyone at a small boutique. Since starting my business, one of my goals has been to become acquainted with local boutiques to provide many choices for my clients. Last spring I walked into Lily Atelier, located in the small but happening town of Camas, WA. While I had browsed in the store previously, this time I was on a mission for jeans. Immediately I felt welcomed and was given personal attention to find that right pair. Two of their most popular brands are Makers USA and Agave. Agave provides an amazing fit that I’ve seen first hand on other women. I chose the Makers because who doesn’t love wearing a pair that reads two sizes lower than what you normally wear! (I know, I say do NOT be concerned about the size–but it is nice!) If you kept up on my denim series you know how important it is to have the right fit. These women will be honest and give you that 2nd opinion. They know denim! Check out this article on Agave.
In addition to denim, you will find a variety of other pieces. Because the inventory is turning quickly, I enjoy the fact that what I have chosen will not be seen all over Vancouver. Owner, Dawn Stanchfield has a great eye and keen sense of what her clientele is looking for. You already know all about my feet issues and when I did the series on shoes. Two of my favorite brands were from Lily–Fidji and Helle Comfort. Lily carries Fidji styles not shown at other stores.
Your first reaction may be… I can’t afford high end clothes in small boutiques. I encourage you again to think of COST PER WEAR. Most likely your whole wardrobe cannot come from boutiques. Look for unique, quality, classic pieces that are going to be worn again/again. Add your name to the mailing list so you will hear about promotions and sales. You can also plan an “after hours” shopping event and receive shopping credit. I did this in November for my clients and friends. We had the whole store to ourselves and had a great time.
Quite honestly, customer service means a great deal to me and is worth a higher price. I like it when everyone knows my name (quite a feat with my last name). They know I can’t purchase something every time I pop in, but are quick to show me what is new without pressure to buy. If you are too busy to shop and are looking for certain items, they will call you when something comes in. Even if Camas is not in your backyard, it’s worth grabbing a few friends and making the drive. Be sure and tell them I sent you.
I love partnering with local businesses and excited to give away a $25 Gift Certificate to Lily Atelier. Make a comment and you will automatically be entered. Contest ends Monday, March 29 @ 9 pm PST. For all of you reading from different states, I know this keeps you from participating. The next Giveaway will again include everyone.
Lia Sophia Jewelry Giveaway
One of the best aspects of having your own business is meeting some dynamic women. I am partnering with many of them in the upcoming months to promote their businesses. Starting with jewelry, I’d like to introduce Kym Merrick of Lia Sophia Jewelry. Check out this site to learn a little more about Kym and view the entire catalog online.
I love Lia Sophia jewelry! Great selection, great price point, versatility AND specials. Their line features gold and silver pieces. I like gold with warm colors and silver tones with cool colors. I can personally speak to the amazing hostess benefits as I received many free/discounted pieces this past summer. I also appreciate the Ongoing Special: Purchase 2 pieces at regular price and receive 1 HALF price. The half price item can be the most expensive piece.(who does that?) March Special: Buy 2 at regular price, get any 1 half off plus 3 additional necklaces at half price.Your most expensive items are ALWAYS your half off items! And if you do not like what you ordered–exchange or return is easy!
Kym and I also tag team at some of her jewelry parties. Want to host a jewelry party with a twist? If you would like to have Kym and I do a joint Lia Sophia/What to Wear show Contact me. Let us show you how to accessorize. Some Lia Sophia long necklaces can even be worn as a belt!
These photos show the versatility Lia Sophia designs offer. It’s one of my favorites. I’m showing 4 different ways to wear the same necklace. It is the perfect complement with neutral tones of clothing.

Now on to the Giveaway! View #1 shows closeup version my camera did not capture. View #2 shows length.

Don’t forget to take a peek at the Lia Sophia catalog! Please note, the items to be given away are LTD pieces from last year and not available in the spring catalog.
Magazine Addict/Redbook Giveaway
I’m a magazine addict! Don’t get me wrong, I love to read a good book and in fact read two while on vacation in December. But there is nothing better than poring over a stack of magazines. First came the middle school magazine fund raisers that my kids were involved in for six straight years. I was their best customer. About that same time we received that offer ”Use Your Airline Miles Before They Expire”. The only choice: MAGAZINES. Titles I loved (In Style, Lucky, Redbook, O, Self, Marie Claire) were missing from the list. Instead I had issues of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, W in my piles. It can be hard to keep up. I’m not sure what that says when magazines have become part of my family room decor!

I tear out ideas, file them, mark pages in issues I want to keep. Redbook recently offered a Two for One when I renewed. Perfect Giveaway! Click on the blue link at the top right of this article, leave a comment that you want to be chosen and one of you will receive a FREE subscription to REDBOOK. Contest ends 2/9/10 at midnight PST
When you saw the photos of my magazine clutter, did it cause you to ”think green”? (I do recycle faithfully) I want to get in the habit of reading more magazines online. Last spring I met the editor of a local interest E-magazine here in the Portland-Vancouver area. We collaborated on our first article in November which you will see on my Before/After page.
I am now a regular contributor and link SNAPSHOT on my blog. I encourage you to take a peek at the latest issue and get the idea of reading online. By placing your cursor at the top of the page, you will be able to maneuver through the pages, and even print out the ones you want to keep. There are several choices in views and you can enlarge a section to get the closeup. Give it a try. E-magazines are green! Snapshot is a FREE subscription.
My recent article is a compilation of a few things posted previously, but with a twist. The focus is on using what you have in your closet. In short, the three things to remember.
1. Shop your closet to look for new combinations
2. Find a piece in your closet that is a bit dull and add accessories
3. Choose a piece that you’ve had 2-3 years and give it some new life with a current trend
The theme of this article is Reinvent. It provides a springboard for next week when I discuss Hairstyles and how to Evolve your Style.
