Golden Globes Fashion

When it comes to awards show there are times when I love to watch it moment by moment. Other times I’m so happy for the DVR so I can watch the highlights and fast forward through the rest. Last night was a DVR night. I have not seen many of the movies nominated this year. I don’t often catch the shows that aren’t on the major networks.

For my annual Golden Globe post, I decided to divide it into categories. I liked many dresses this year, but I did not have an absolute favorite. As always, I try to come up with my own views before watching or reading any of the Fashion Police out there. We’ll see who agrees with me tomorrow!

Best Mermaid: Sofia Vergara

The Best in Pastels : Jessica Alba and Julie Bowen

Most Unique Style: Charlize Theron and Claire Danes

The Best in Red: Reese Witherspoon (was it just me? I didn’t love her hair tonight.)

Unique Color of the Evening: Zooey Deschanel

Best Newcomer: Viola Davis

Best Couple: George Clooney and Stacy Keibler

Didn’t Love it: Jessica Biel, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Julianna Margulies and Michelle Williams

Most Disappointing: Meryl Streep

I think she is a brilliant actress and have loved most everything she has done. I just don’t care for the way she dresses at awards shows.

Pantyhose: A New Trend?

A few weeks ago I wrote about my admiration for Kate Middleton. Recently I was scrolling through some internet news when I came across this headline ”Has Kate started a new trend?” Of course I had to check it out.

Perhaps many of you caught the same thing. It seems that Kate’s recent tour to Canada and the US sparked a new interest in of all things, Pantyhose. Did you notice Kate’s lovely legs in all those dresses? All this talk about pantyhose after my recent posts on hose and self tanners.

I went to What Kate Wore and sure enough, there was a poll about Kate’s pantyhose! You will notice from the large number of women who participated in the poll and the number of comments in the previous post that this is something that we as women are quite opinionated about!

What do I think? Keep in mind that Kate’s hose are very sheer, and the color is right on. Most people probably didn’t even know she was wearing them. These are not the hose of years ago that were thick, dark brown and came from a drugstore. Kate also wore a closed toe shoe. When she did wear an open toe–no hose.

The last time I wore tan hose was in the year 1997. I remember distinctly because I had to attend a formal wedding, I didn’t have a tan, and self tanners were not that prevalent. I went to find sheer hose and was introduced to a pair of DKNY that were $15–a far cry from the days of L’eggs and No Nonsense! Honestly, they did the trick for that dress.

Now, years later, I prefer opaque tights or the patterned sheer tights I showed in the above post. I do like the way my feet slip into a pump with hose. My feet don’t swell and “stick” to the shoes. I’m not running out to buy a pair of Kate’s hose, but when it comes to fashion I’ve learned to “never say never”.

Watching and Admiring Kate’s Style

Today I put aside my typical topics and advice and just show some fun photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a.k.a Prince William and Kate Middleton. As you may know, they are on tour of Canada and headed for LA on the weekend. One of my friends sent me a link to a website devoted to showing all the things Kate wore and where each piece came from. I admit I was fascinated.

I loved Princess Diana and enjoyed looking at every photo of her. I believe Kate will be admired in the same way. So far she appears to be handling the attention well. I like how she is confident in her style and chooses her own clothes. She puts them together beautifully. I’ve even seen side/side photos showing the same coat or dress (from 2008/2009) THEN and NOW. Refreshing. Kate knows how to wear the same thing and make it look a little different. She’s a girl after my own heart.

So in case you haven’t had a chance to keep up, here are some highlights. I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve when she gets to LA

I’m partial to the purple. Love the jacket, jeans, the wedges. Super cute!

Beyond the fashion, you just can’t help but love seeing the two of them together embracing their roles. And then it makes me sad at the same time wishing Diana were still here to be a part of it all.

Fashion at the Oscars 2011

It was another dazzling evening at the Oscars. Just as the Golden Globes were about green, last night was an evening in RED. My favorites in red were:

I enjoyed all of Anne Hathaway’s gowns last night, but this one was stunning.

Jennifer Lawrence, a newcomer to the Awards took such a simple style and made it a WOW. Her hair and makeup were also lovely.

Sandra Bullock got this one right in comparison to the Globes in my opinion.

The Neutrals: I love color on the Red Carpet, but there are neutrals every year that are worth showing. It was also nice to see a few different faces.

Mandy Moore, Hailee Steinfeld (age 14) and Gwyneth Paltrow

Just Ok for me this time around:

Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johanson

I’m sure others will rave, but these were not my favorites this year.

Unique Colors for the Evening:

Helen Mirren in a gun metal. I have enjoyed watching her the last years and she did it well again for the Oscars.

I have great admiration for Jennifer Hudson’s talent and recent weight loss. Not a huge fan of this dress, but the tangerine color gets some press.

Mila Kunis in lavender. This is not typically my style or favorite color; I thought she wore it well and looked amazing

Amy Adams in midnight blue was gorgeous as always.

Natalie Portman was radiant in this color and overall MY FAVORITE for the evening!

They didn’t ask me:

Florence Welch (lead singer of Florence and the Machine,) Cate Blanchett and Melissa Leo

Ok so I love their talent (especially Melissa Leo for her winning role in The Fighter this year) but not their style.

Golden Globes Fashion

It’s Awards Show time. I don’t write about celebrity fashion very often, but I can’t resist a couple of times a year. I enjoy the red carpet more than the awards.

I like the Golden Globe Awards a little more than the Oscars sometimes because they encompass television and movies. I catch TV because of a wonderful invention called the DVR, but I see only select movies throughout the year.

On to the fashion… While watching the arrivals on the red carpet, it soon became apparent that emerald green was the color of the night.

Mila Kunis, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Elisabeth Moss all wore each shade of green extremely well. While the fabric was a little unusual in the third gown, she always looks stunning and I actually loved all four.

Next, the neutrals of the evening:

While I tend to love color, these four women get it right every time I see them. Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway and Carrie Underwood. A little predictable and similar to what we’ve seen in the past, but classy nonetheless.

Favorites of the night:Sofia Vergera from Modern Family in Vera Wang. I’m not sure if I am swayed a little by her acting in my new favorite show. She is drop-dead gorgeous. Runner-up goes to Amy Adams. While I would have preferred the bow embellishment on the shoulder only, the color was fabulous and unique to the evening. I thought she looked wonderful.

I wasn’t so sure about:

Heidi Klum really can’t go wrong in anything. However, her dress this time was just too “out there” for my style. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Halle Barry look more amazing, but the dress had a bit of a “lingerie” look to me.

And finally, the next category is: “They didn’t ask me”.

Just my opinion. Tomorrow all the fashion bloggers and stylists on the morning shows will be discussing this at length. It will be interesting to hear if any of them share my views. Typically everyone sees something different and that is what makes it fun. What did you think? Even if you didn’t see the show do you have a favorite from any of the photos?

Fashion at the Oscars

In case you missed it, last night was the 2010 Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Fashion Police are all over the internet today. While my blog isn’t about covering celebrity fashion, I couldn’t resist weighing in with my opinions.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Sandra Bullock: Love her, loved The Blind Side and thought she looked stunning last night. I couldn’t find too many things wrong with this one. I even liked the red lipstick contrary to other opinions. Penelope Cruz gets it right year after year and I am very partial to red!

Black/midnight blue dresses that didn’t get much press: Kristen Stewart—no necklace OR earrings? Mariska Hargitay–Gorgeous

Most Improved from other Award Events: Meryl Streep and Tina Fey. Still a B in my book.

Deeper Color Please! Queen Latifah and Jennifer Lopez. Both of these women can pull off much more intense and saturated colors. Both were a wow, could have been a WOW!
