Oscar Fashion 2012

Last night was another fashion extravaganza at the Oscars. As I’ve done in the past, I’ve come up with my own unique categories.

Best Look NOT in a Size 0: Octavia Spencer

She dressed beautifully for her body type. I loved the movie, loved her performance and am so happy she won!

Best Colors of the Evening: Viola Davis and Michelle Williams

Most Daring: Jennifer Lopez

Unique Style: Emma Stone and Stacey Kiebler

Simple Elegance: Penelope Cruz and Milla Jovovich  (My personal favorites for the evening)

They should have consulted Style by Karen: I love all these ladies, just did not care for these dresses.

Sherri Shepard, Nancy O’Dell, Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy

Who were your favorites?

Let’s Hear it From YOU!

It’s time again to request feedback from you, my readers.

Recently I met one of my readers when I was out and about. She recognized me!  Now, as a blogger, this is a very interesting concept. As I’ve mentioned before, blogging can be a lonely world–one that does not provide you with face/face contact. You start by introducing your blog to family, friends and business contacts. You hope they will pass it on. Using assorted avenues to get your blog more exposure, you slowly hope that it will catch on and be well received. Eventually your readership becomes primarily strangers you do not know or will ever meet in person.

Because of these  characteristics unique to blogging, it makes it even MORE fun to meet a reader in person. Reality hits. Yes, people are out there reading that I don’t know and will never meet. It’s a really strange concept to say the least.

We chatted for a few minutes and I took the opportunity to ask what SHE would like me to write about. After giving her suggestions, this reader was also quick to say…
“But maybe that is not what the majority of your readers want to hear.”

The bottom line is, I really like to ask for feedback periodically because I want to write about topics that pertain to YOU. Many fashion blogs have a certain audience. It’s probably fair to say that I speak to 40+ readers. At the same time, I know that I have twenty something and thirty something readers.

We as bloggers don’t know many details about readers unless they make a comment. And I know from the statistics, that there are many more reading that commenting. Every time a reader unsubscribes I wonder if it is due to content.

So now it’s time to turn it over to you. In a recent comment one reader asked for posts about new spring trends. I’ve been covering that off and on. Recently I’ve covered hairstyles and skin care which are also such a big part of your overall image.

Here are some questions. You can pick one or answer all.

1. Is there a topic you would like me to cover?

2. Would you like to see more or fewer posts? (currently I post about 2 times a week)

3. Keeping in mind that not every post will be of interest, do the majority of my posts speak to you?

4. I have mixed it up lately, but would you like to see longer or shorter posts?

You can answer in your comment like this to make it easy.

1. Going gray gracefully

2. More

3. yes

4. no opinion

Thank you very much! I have long list of ideas and hopefully it will be on track with your comments.

Denim Choices

This year there seems to be more choices than ever for denim. Everything from trouser to skinny is in. The cuts are varied and now there are colors. Recently I found a great article on another blog I read. I think you will find this thorough overview on denim to be very helpful.

A special thanks to Jo-Lynne from Musings of a Housewife for allowing me to share. Enjoy.

Let’s hear it for the  perfect denim. Does it exist? Currently, what is your favorite pair of jeans? I’ll weigh in too as I respond to your comments.

Denim in Brights

It first appeared on store websites last spring. This year colored denim is out in full force.

Your first reaction may be: Do I really want to call that much attention to my bottom half? I meet SO many women that prefer neutrals and have a strong aversion to color. With those two facts in mind, part of me is wondering if this colored denim trend will be a hit.

The “jury is out” as far as I can tell.  Women have mixed feelings. I like color. I do hope to add some colored denim to my closet sometime soon. I just can’t decide which color it is going to be!

My #1 styling rule with this trend is: Keep the top neutral. I know color blocking is in. I do meet women who love brights. But I have to say that keeping the color on the bottom is the way to go.

You will be able to find colored denim just about everywhere. Here are some from Ann Taylor. They have a great special: Spend $150 and receive one item 40% off.

Blue Essence at Nordstrom has quite an array of color! These are also a pretty generous and a flattering fit.

Many women have grown to love the generous fit of  Kut from the Kloth. The dark red is a great color. Still not sure? Try a selection with a less intensity like the green from Wit and Widsom. All from Nordstrom

I have not seen colored denim in many boot cut styles. If you are worried about a skinny, opt for the straighter cut from Ann Taylor (above)  NYDJ  (below)

Now, how to style?

I like colored denim with a neutral top, a piece of jewelry or a multi colored scarf that ties in some of the color from the jeans.

Not all Stripes are Created Equal

Thanks everyone for all your comments on the Stella and Dot Jewelry giveaway post. It’s not too late. You will be entered in the drawing by making a comment about your favorite S & D piece. Click on that link and let me know what you love. Winner will be announced tomorrow.

Stripes have taken the stores by storm. Last year stripes appeared everywhere and this year they are back!

I’ve read and heard that anyone can wear stripes. I can’t completely agree with that or endorse every type of stripe for absolutely every body type. However, let me point out that not all stripes are created equal. So let’s take a look at the variety of stripes we are seeing this season. I will try to point out the differences. You will soon start to notice what designers do to minimize and maximize in the right places.

Typically women have stayed away from wide horizontal stripes as they felt the wider stripes added volume. I’m not a fan of the wide stripe. However, the dress below coupled with the jacket with a narrow stripe works. A big part of the success of this look has to do with the cut and shape of the dress. The belt also brings in the waist. You will see in the following examples that the cut of the garment is going to make all the difference.

The sweater has wider stripes that appear to get a little more narrow towards the top (at least from the photo) While this particular piece works fine on the model, I would NOT recommend it for someone with broad shoulders who carries their weight in their upper torso. Note how those stripes and the neckline of the sweater visually extend the shoulder line. If you were trying to balance smaller shoulders with wider hips–this would be a great style for you. Both available at LOFT.

The jacket and zip sweater below work because the stripe is narrow. I like how the red/blue striped jacket is designed with varied stripe widths with one darker bold stripe. I have seen this jacket on a number of women and the shape is extremely flattering especially in the back. The type of stripe along with great fabric and cut makes this one a winner on many body types. Caslon Jacket from Nordstrom

This sweater from LOFT also has a great shape. The zipper as well as the pockets break up the continuous horizontal stripe. (did not appear to be online now, you could check in stores)

Below, notice how the wide horizontal stripes are at the bottom of the dress where most women can handle a little more volume. It visually creates a flattering A-line. Imagine this same dress with those wide stripes through the whole dress–it just wouldn’t work. The solid green band makes a difference too because it brings in the waist. I also think the striped tee works because of the varied width AND color. It’s much more interesting and visually appealing. Do you ever look at striped pieces and get dizzy? I like the variety. Nanette Lepore and Payton from Nordstrom

Next is a great example of a B/W stripe. Again, the narrow stripes are great with a solid block at the bottom. Now imagine this same top with stripes from top to bottom. If you have wider hips, the stripes on the hips would make them look wider. Instead the solid black will minimize the hips.

The other top is a great example of stripes going in a different direction. This piece is perfect for a body type with broader shoulders and smaller hips or for the typical rectangle figure. The stripes come in at an angle minimizing the shoulders and upper torso. The blousy style camoflauges the middle while the horizontal stripes at the bottom add volume to balance the top.

Lauren Hansen and Olivia Moon from Nordstrom

Here is another style of top that I’ve seen on women and the vertical–almost horizontal combined with a blousy style has been extremely flattering.

Pleione from Nordstrom

Note how the stripes are varied in this cardigan. I think the wider stripes on the top are a nice contrast to the narrow ones in the middle. The sweater is lying flat, but I can visualize this on someone and the darker narrow stripe would bring in the waist and minimize it in comparison to the wider stripes on the top.

I’ll be anxious for you to weigh in here. What say you? Will you be looking at stripes with a more critical eye? Will you give them a try?

If stripes still are not your thing, pair a striped piece with a solid color jacket or sweater. The stripes add interest and I think you’ll be pleased with the variety they can add to outfits.

Stella & Dot Giveaway

It’s time for another jewelry giveaway! I’ve featured Stella & Dot several times, and it is one of my favorite lines. Thanks to consultant, Kyla Glass for sponsoring this Giveaway. Coincidentally, Kyla became a consultant last year after seeing the post on my Style by Karen Facebook page. She fell in love with the earrings I pictured and signed up shortly thereafter. Kyla and I have common friends, but had only met a couple of times. Since then we’ve become friends through Facebook, my blog and now our common interest in S & D. I enjoy helping women kick off a business and am happy to be featuring this company once again.

I look forward to the new catalog each season to see the unique styles. I love reading about the background that goes into each design, and it’s fun to hear about the inspiration that drove the designs.

“New ideas are everywhere… from vintage stores & art galleries of faraway cities to urban sidewalk graffiti to the fresh vibrant colors of a farmer’s market produce display.”
- Blythe Harris, CCO

In addition to vintage feel, I think one of the best features of this line is the mixture of silver and gold. Many styles are available in both. I went through my silver phase like everyone else. Believe me, there are certain pieces of silver jewelry that I’m very drawn to. Certain outfits just scream for a bold piece of silver jewelry.

But, I like to mix it up. I encourage you to embrace some gold in your wardrobe. Gold looks beautiful with warm colors; lately I like it with just about everything.

MEMO: Gold is everywhere and it is IN!

Rather than show individual pieces, I went to the S & D blog so you could get some ideas of how to wear the jewelry. Wow, look at these combinations. Stunning!

The Stella & Dot site is easy to navigate and the shop area is divided into categories: Necklaces, bracelets, earrings and now even handbags!

There are great videos that show even more ideas. Don’t forget the sale category. I love the Cascading Chain and own the la Coco Chain  Both are winners.

Now to the Giveaway. Kyla is giving away a $25 Gift Certificate AND the Chloe necklace.

I will choose TWO winners. To enter, make a comment and tell us about your favorite piece of jewelry and why you love it. Contest ends Wednesday, February 8th at 9 PM PST.

My favorites? Too many to show. Last fall I did a Series What I Wore for a Week.  Almost every day I wore a little S & D. Many of those pieces are still available.

This year I want that statement necklace shown in the Casual Friday layout above. I also am very partial to the blue shown with tangerine in the Date Night layout. I am happy to answer any questions about the jewelry and please feel free to contact Kyla through her website.

I can’t wait to hear about your favorites!

Color Blocking: Part 2

Last week I showed a layout with one of Spring 2012′s new trends: Color Blocking. It’s not a new concept by any means, but it’s all over this spring.

Using a site called Polyvore, I like to show quick layouts of outfits so you could duplicate it on your own perhaps from other sources. It’s also a fun way to show merchandise from sites I would never go to or even know about if it weren’t on Polyvore. Sometimes the things are reasonably priced, other times not. The visuals come from all over and I like to show a little bit of everything.

If you didn’t like those ideas of color blocking, perhaps some pictures from stores you are used to shopping will give you a little different idea. Right now you can put Color Block in the search box of any major store and a number of designs will pop up.

From Nordstrom

           Eliza J                                             Bailey 44

White House Black Market

What do I think? I’m not sure what I will choose if anything. I do like many of the color block styles. I like the way bold solid colors are mixed together. I like the fun patterns that created with creative color blocking. I think that many of the styles I have shown are extremely flattering–particularly the dresses.

Dark colors minimize. Color blocking can work to your advantage if you want to minimize a certain body part. The band of white around the Vince Camuto dress creates a more defined waistline just by varying the blocks of color. As one reader pointed out, this style is a great way to transition into pattern if that just isn’t your thing.

Perhaps this trend isn’t for you. You do not have to try every new trend that is out there.

What do you think? Will you give it a try this spring?
