If you happened to read my post on Back to School Fashion, I noted that the wonderful photos were taken by Barbara Hill. In effort to keep my articles of reasonable length, I decided to feature Barbara in a separate post with more examples of her work. Especially for Style by Karen, Barbara is giving away a FREE sitting. (valued at $150)

I met Barb through our Women’s Entrepreneur Group. She photographs many kids and families; I knew she would be the perfect fit for my project. Weeks after she agreed, I e-mailed her in a bit of desperation. My oldest was leaving for college. Some time ago my husband requested a photo shoot of our two boys and himself on the golf course. (I do not golf) Somehow in the busyness of life that never happened. Barb fit us in, working around our schedule which was crazy mid-August.

We whisked her off in the golf cart, the golfers explained what they wanted, and in a short time she had captured their love for the game. All while putting up with my husband’s sense of humor, teenagers who were polite but really didn’t have “time” for this, not to mention a tight squeeze in the golf cart! Describing this scene should convey to you that Barb is a pleasure to work with. She has quite a witty sense of humor herself. She is creative, energetic and related well to the kids. My son said, “She made picture taking fun, not a hassle!”

From weddings, to pets to Seniors, here are some examples of the variety of her work.

As for that golf photo? Well my indecisiveness caused me to miss my own deadline. I can’t make up my mind on what to choose!

It’s back to school for many students today. Some parts of the country have been back at it for a couple of weeks. Still others will start after Labor Day. In honor of a new school year, I decided to put aside my typical topics and give you a taste of some teenage fashion! Whether your kids are at this age, out of the house, or just toddlers, I thought it would be fun to show what kids today are wearing!

All photos by Barbara Hill Photography. A big thanks to Barb for working with me. I will be featuring more of her work in an upcoming post/giveaway.

Middle School can be a turning point for many kids when it comes to fashion. For some,(girls especially) it certainly starts in elementary school. I don’t recall clothes ever being an issue for my boys until about the 6th grade. Shopping for them was relatively easy. But then middle school rolled around. Our favorite inexpensive stores were no longer “cool”. Places such as Amerian Eagle, Abercrombie and Hollister entered the vocabulary. I soon learned to shop the sales at these stores. I grew accustomed to the loud music and limited conversation when shopping. (well not really!)

I asked Emily, a middle school student, to show some of her favorite “Back to School” looks. Skinny jeans are from Abercrombie Kids, shirt from Target and sweatshirt from Hollister. Don’t you love those purple Converse shoes? (Nordstrom)

Next I wanted to show some trends from High School. My son Collin asked some of his friends to help us. Barbara Hill brought along two girls she had previously photographed. It was fun to see the 6 of them(from high schools on the opposite side of town) work together showing off their different styles. I loved seeing each of their personalities come through in what they chose to wear.

Of course a photo shoot would not be complete without the jumping pose! Now that they are in High School, they told me the stores they want to go to are different than what they liked in Middle School with just a little overlap. Favorites are Pac Sun and Zumiez. They like Jeans/shorts from American Eagle and also Abercrombie. The girls liked Forever 21, Nordstrom, Wet Seal. A new hit for a few of the kids was Rue 21 which offered very affordable choices. I’m also putting a vote in for the Nordstrom Rack because we always manage to find things there.

Emma’s dress is from Rue 21, yellow bag by Nino Bossi from Accentuate and the boots shown above are from her MOM’s closet!

Mariah is wearing jeans (jeggings) from American Eagle. Her jacket is from Wet Seal and shirt from Charlotte Russe. Just like Emma, those great boots are borrowed from her mom. Orange handbag is from Accentuate.

Kennady chose jeans from Abercrombie. Green LODIS bag is from Accentuate. Her top and cardigan as well as her Toms are from Nordstrom. Not familiar with these shoes? Click on the link. With each pair purchased, one pair is given to a child in need.

Are boys less particular about what they wear? I’ve learned that some care a whole lot, others not so much! Above Collin, Luke and Russel are all set for their sophomore year. Collin is wearing jeans from AE, and a VERY inexpensive V-neck tee from Rue 21. Luke and Russel are both in combinations from Pac Sun, Rue 21 and Zuimez.

Emma’s sweater vest, burn out tee and owl necklace are from Rue 21.

Mariah’s dress is from Forever 21 and denim jacket is from Nordstrom.

Kennady is wearing a strapless floral dress by Tulle from Accentuate. I can even picture it with a denim jacket and boots or even leggings.

Collin’s lightweight sweatshirt is from Rue 21 and shorts are from American Eagle

Luke’s “military” style jacket: Rue 21

Russel is wearing a Pac Sun shirt and a hat by Hurley. In the photo below you’ll see the guys all have different styles of Vans. Yes, I’m told that that length of socks or no socks at all is the way to go. As for me, I’m just saying–that look takes a little getting used to!

Let the classes begin!

A big thank you to my models. Have a great year!

What did you think? Was it fun to see what kids this age are wearing?

As I continue to encourage jewelry as one of the best ways to accessorize, the thought may come to mind… “Where in the world am I going to store it?” I have shown some photos in the past of solutions I’ve created for myself. The main thing to remember is storing the jewelry so you can SEE it and it is convenient. I go to many homes/closets where the jewelry is nowhere in sight. It’s stuffed into a jewelry box in a drawer and is forgotten about. Again, the answer is very simple:

When you see it, you will wear it!

Many women have space issues in their closets. However, even if you just have a small area of wall space, I think the ideas below may work for you. I usually try to find a small area in the closet where you can put a piece of pegboard. It’s a great way to display jewelry. The photo below is an example of what a client created after my suggestion.

The following photos show the same idea with cork board, straight pins and a belt holder for the heavier necklaces.

Have you found a great way to store your jewlery? Is it out in the open so you can see it and combine with your outfits?

Our winners for the Silpada Giveaway are: Comment #2: Cynthia D. Comment #3: Kristi G. Winners were chosen by random.org. Congratulations to you both. Kristi Thomas will be contacting you soon. Thanks for reading.

Does your closet favor solids or patterns? If you are ”anti-pattern” could it be that when you think of prints this is what comes to mind?

For some of you, it really just boils down to personal preference. But often women admire pattern on others, yet they have completely taken pattern out of their life because they feel it adds pounds. Some aren’t sure how to choose a pattern appropriate to their taste, or they worry it will become dated quickly. Still others fear they are “too old” to wear pattern.

I have outfits that are completely solid. I admire a monochromatic look. I also have a lot of patterns in my closet.

I hope that after reading this post you will start looking at patterns in a different way.

1. They add variety to your closet. Prints and patterns allow for versatility when combined with solids. You have way more combination possibilities not to mention it adds interest! When I go to a client’s house to work in her closet making new combinations, my job is easier when there are patterns!

2. Small patterns can camouflage the middle. The right style top with pattern hides a lot of sins.

3. Still not sure? Add a jacket or cardigan in a solid color so just a touch of the pattern is showing

4. Start with a very subtle pattern like a super small print or very narrow stripe.

5. Just NOT you? Stick with your solids but add some jewelry, a belt or scarf (even a solid in a contrasting color will add some interest)

Look at all the possibilities for combinations in the tops below. All these tops are great examples of pieces that mix and match with 2-3 basic neutral colors. Brown, black or gray for skirts/pants. You could add sweaters/jackets in brighter accent colors OR stay neutral. Small colorful patterns as shown below bring the eye up–to your face! Patterns allow you to mix in several of your favorite colors along with a color that perhaps isn’t your best in a solid shade. And, I’ll be honest, when you are wearing the wrong color solid it can be drab, boring, cause you to look tired and even older.

Yes, patterns on plus size models. They look fabulous!

More patterns. One a little more abstract and bold, the other very subtle. And the asymmetrical hemlines are becoming a huge favorite of mine!

Let’s weigh in here. I’d love to hear from you. Does your closet favor patterns, solids or a nice mix?

I believe I went to my first Silpada party nearly ten years ago. It was love at first sight. Since that time, Silpada as a company has achieved great success. I enjoy promoting a company started by two women who believe in helping women succeed by working from home. Over the years I’ve gotten to know several Silpada consultants and have been to numerous shows. Women (myself included) are drawn to the unique designs. Whether it’s a statement piece, smaller necklace/earrings, or a touch of color, Silpada has it.

I’d like to introduce Silpada consultant, Kristi Thomas. You saw Kristi modeling in a previous post about belts. Today I’m writing about jewelry but click back and take a look at the belts as well. Be sure and click on her WEBSITE to learn more about Silpada as a company, and view all the beautiful jewelry!

Kristi is generously giving away TWO $25 Gift certificates.Your comment will enter you in the drawing and TWO WINNERS will be chosen. Whether you are local or long distance, Kristi will take care of you. She has a wonderful sense of style, and is very talented at combining her outfits with jewelry ensembles. Silpada is a perfect fit for Kristi. I have enjoyed getting to know her the last year and am happy to feature her business on my blog. If you need help finding that right piece for a certain outfit or perhaps stepping out of your comfort zone with jewelry, give Kristi a call.

In recent posts I’ve mentioned that mixing metals is a current trend. Ironically, I’ve been mixing silver and gold for years. I’ve always loved 2-tone jewelry and bought my first watch with silver/gold in the nineties. I recall looking high and low for a two tone setting for my diamond in the Caribbean 8 years ago—hard to find! I succumbed to trends several years ago when I had my diamonds reset for a 20thanniversary. I went with complete white gold as it fit the vintage look I was trying to create. At times I miss my gold/silver combo.

I still standby the “rule” that gold looks better with warm tones and silver with cool tones. I wear both. I like to mix it. This season you’ll see gold silver and copper. Can’t wait to start mixing that and any other metals. Love these 2-tone pieces from Silpada.

Silpada is known for mixing silver, colored gemstones, and pearls. It adds texture and interest. The multi-stone look is one I love because I believe it increases the versatility of the piece tenfold. It also keeps away that “matchy-matchy” look in jewelry when your necklace, earrings and bracelet all match. Believe me, I have had my share of sets over the years. Instead, try to blend rather than match. It really adds interest to any jewelry combinations. I like to pick out one of the stones that is least dominant and find coordinating pieces to pick that up. If you like your pieces to match exactly I will be the last person to criticize. I just applaud you for wearing jewelry in the first place and adding interest and color to your outfit! Below are some great Silpada examples with multi stones.

Hopefully now you can see the possibilities. Above in VIEW #1 you can look for a necklace that has a pearls to go with these earrings. Look at all the versatility in VIEW #2. And for the last set of earrings you could pick out a necklace that would coordinate with the cubic zirconia. Now think the other way around and take a look at some necklaces and think what you could do with earrings.

These small photos don’t do justice to a 100 page catalog. You can view the catalog online beautifully. These pages will also show you the fine art of layering pieces which gives you many ideas to combine your smaller pieces with another longer. My previous post on jewelry may also give you some insight.

So what do you think? Are you ready to try mixing metals and stones? Post your comment by Sunday, August 22nd at 8 PM PST to be entered in the drawing.

One of the first topics I covered when I started my blog was closet organization. If you’re new to my blog, you may want to start reading there for a quick overview. I still stand by the tips I gave then, and thought I would give an update to reiterate a few of the things I discussed before.

Since that post, I’ve worked with more clients which always gives me new ideas. When I edit closets, I also try to give my input on how the closet is organized. Some things are a quick and easy fix. Women love a new idea that doesn’t take major changes.

My #1 recommendation is to get rid of plastic or wire hangers. The tube hangers take more space and frankly clothes do not stay hung nicely on these hangers. Things are always slipping off. I understand that it is hard to get rid of perfectly good hangers. Do yourself a favor and make the switch. It is not a huge investment. Previously I recommended the jumbo box of the slim, velvet covered hangers from Costco. 50 for $15! Clients told me they were no longer in the stores. I was just about ready to write… “You know how Costco is…one month they are there, the next month they are not.” Instead of writing my blog last night, I made a trip to Costco. I’m so glad I waited to write. There were the hangers repackaged 50 for $18! Yahoo!

This time they have included Deluxe Suit Hangers with shoulder pads which are great for sweaters as well. You will also notice a cross bar for ties or scarves. I could not find this set at Costco.com, but check your local store. There are also been sightings of these hangers at Ross and Walmart, but in smaller packages.

#2. When you see it, you’ll wear it! I said this previously but am writing it again because I’m amazed how many women have really nice things stuffed in drawers. If clothing is stuffed on shelves or in drawers, you forget about it. I encourage hanging as many things as possible. It’s a visual thing! And with these great hangers, you’ll have more space. If you are worried about hanging sweaters, don’t be. I hang all my sweaters and it isn’t a problem. I realize those of you that have spacious closets want to use those great shelves for your nice sweaters. Do a test with yourself and track if you wear things more when they are hung or folded on a shelf.

#3 Separate Casual/Everyday clothes from dress clothes. I like my very casual clothes to be separate from my dress clothes. I encourage clients to do the same. The less thumbing through clothes you must do when getting ready, the faster you will go. It’s simply a time saver. When I get ready, I want to quickly choose a bottom, top, sweater or jacket (if necessary) I don’t want to be looking through casual pieces that don’t even factor in as a possibility. Organize your closet by category and then color within each category and valuable minutes will be saved!

I have another great way to store your jewelry using a pegboard which I’ll be sharing soon to coincide with our upcoming Jewelry Giveaways!

Do you have a great storage or organization tip?

Bear with me and hopefully things will be back to normal soon. You also can easily get to my sidebar by clicking on my SERVICES page. Thank you for reading.

Ok, I admit it. I return a great deal of what I buy. I’m improving. I am learning to make wise choices IN the dressing room or store. I know how to choose flattering styles for my body type. I carefully think about the CPW (cost per wear). When purchasing a new item, I calculate how many things I have presently sitting in my closet that it will coordinate with. I believe I’m heading in the right direction.

Many women make the wrong choices and NEVER get around to returning it. Life is busy, the store is not convenient, or they were not aware of the return policy. Poor choices come from being in a hurry or not taking the time to try something on. Then it sits in the closet with tags attached. It might be given to a friend, consigned or donated. Bottom line: Not a good use of your money. Other women are embarrassed to return. Get over that! While my return rate has decreased, there are still times that I get something home and for whatever reason, it’s not what I had hoped for.

Here are some tips to help you make better choices:

1. Try it on! Walk around outside the dressing room and look at yourself in a couple of different mirrors. Sit down, move around and get a feel for it. Unsure about size? Go up or down a size to compare. I always recommend the compare tactic if you just aren’t sure.

2. Ask the sales associate for advice. I can’t always guarantee they are going to be honest especially if they have commission rates in their head, but you need to try. Friends are a great source. Make sure you bring someone who knows your style well and will be honest.

After the Purchase:

1. Keep all tags. I use a drawer in my nightstand. Returns are MUCH easier when you have the tags. Nordstrom tracks by the bar code on the tag and you don’t even need a receipt. Target can look up items purchased up to 90 days if purchased on a credit card-no receipt needed. For most others stores you are going to need a receipt and tags. It doesn’t matter if they are attached unless there is a special note. I’ve seen this on formal wear as stores were probably receiving a high return rate for dresses worn once for a special occasion. I don’t throw out the tags until I’ve worn/washed the item many times. (in case there is a defect) I keep all receipts in a special compartment in my wallet/purse.

2. Know your return policies. Check your receipts for the info or ASK as your items are totalled. Small boutiques generally offer 7 days with Store Credit only. Other stores are store credit only AFTER 30 DAYS.

3. Online purchases can often be returned at the store (Macy’s or Nordstrom) If they offer FREE return shipping, it’s just a matter of a few clicks on your computer to print that label.

What’s your return rate? If you have things sitting with tags, there are dollars right in your closet that can be exchanged for something else, consigned or even better-CASH or Credit to your Card.

It’s hard to think about fall clothes. In the Northwest we’ve had summer for approximately 6 weeks. I’m hopeful our summer lasts through September. However, if you went to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale or have been in a shopping mall, you know the stores are full of fall clothes. The ads in the paper are all about school supplies. In reality, when August hits, fall is right around the corner.

Here is what I’m seeing for Fall 2010:

1. Leather and Fur. I don’t know if leather ever left, but it does come and go and this year you’ll see lots of pleather that looks really good. Imagine washable leather! I have yet to find my perfect leather jacket at a reasonable price. But it is on the list. The motorcycle style jacket is big this season.

(Leather from Macy’s, Fur from Nordstrom)

2. Boots have been all the rage for a number of seasons. The last couple of years boots have become even more popular (jeans tucked in) We need more boots and there are more choices. Now you will see a little of everything: Over the knee, mid calf, booties and more booties. I like the look of a bootie with the skinny jean or legging. I have one pair and am looking for another. These are different than the ankle boot we’ve seen in past years. All the detail is meant to be shown. They also look great with skirts/tights. The third picture below is what I refer to as a “shootie”. Love them! (All shoes from Macy’s)

3. Jeans and leggings.

I’m excited to see options. I still love my boot cut with some outfits, but am moving to more straight cut, and have added a modified skinny and jegging to my collection. The latter options look great with the long sweaters, jackets and tunics. And it doesn’t appear that leggings are going anywhere anytime soon. You have the leggings that are worn as pants and the leggings that are worn mid calf under a dress (see below). Check Leggings, Jeggings and Skinnies for a quick review.

4. Romantic is in!

All from White House Black Market

5. Jewelry trends: layers of pearls and mixed metals. You will see silver, gold and copper. I’ll be covering this in detail next week. But look at all the pearls from Nordstrom and White House Black Market!
