As you learned in The Perfect Closet, my own personal closet has many flaws both in space and design. Storing accessories so they are accessible is even more of a challenge. When I help women with their closets, I often find that they are not wearing the beautiful accessories they own because they are tucked away and not visible. They aren’t aware of all the wonderful combinations that are right there in front of them.
Shoes: A tiered shelf does the trick for most of the shoes. Boots don’t fit on the shelf, but the floor works for me. All off-season shoes go in the boxes on my closet top shelf. Boots go in original boxes under my bed or in far corner on closet floor.

Belts: Most belts worn with pants/jeans are hung on the hooks. Belts used as an “accessory” are rolled and put in square canvas box.(I have a lot of belts) You could also divide by putting wide/medium in the box and hanging all the skinny belts.

Handbags: The ones I currently rotate through sit in a basket close to my door ready for the quick switch. The others go in the designer “dust bags” and on the closet shelf. Also on the shelf: a few purses not used as frequently and a canvas box with lid for the special occasion beaded purses & wraps.
Jewelry:This photo was taken at a client’s house as I was in awe of her system. She also had drawers with small organizers for earrings and smaller pieces (not pictured) We have both looked for these bracelet and necklace holders and have not been able to put our finger on the same product. Presently I use two small velvet lined drawers in the top part of my dresser designed for jewlery. This is NOT the answer. I’m continuing to search for options for both myself and clients.

Scarves: ???I’ll let you know when I find the perfect solution that works for me.

Do you have the perfect closet or perfect way to store accessories? Please do share! If you are like me, and have a small closet and are storage challenged I’d love to know your tip(s).

IKEA has a perfect solution to scarfs. Here is the link. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70108912
KOMPLEMENT, Multi-use hanger
Takes up as little space as a clothes-hanger but can store 28 different accessories.
Can be washed by hand.
Helps you organize shawls, belts, ties, etc.
I bought one for my daughter and it works perfectly. She even hangs belts on it. And who can beat $7.99.
Thanks Shiela! I’m checking it out.
I love IKEA and all their organizational stuff. I need to look for that scarf organizer!
I just took on the huge task of cleaning my closet. What mess! It is definitely NOT my strength. I appreciate all the tips for organizing. Here is something my friend introduced me too at IKEA. They are drawer organizers. They have helped divide my drawers up into manageable, usable, spaces. They have also been awesome in my daughters nursery to separate out and organize all her little socks, bows, onesies, etc. I think Target might have something similar too.

Also…I have a REALLY hard time getting rid of clothes. I have approx. 10 black cardigans and can’t part with any of them. Here was a tip on Oprah that I might try. They said to hang all your clothes on the rod so the hanger is backwards (you would come from behind the rod to hang it up). Then once you have worn an item, hang it the correct way. After a period of time, it will be a really easy way to see what you have and haven’t worn. The things you haven’t worn will still have the hanger facing the other way, and the things you have worn will have the hanger facing the correct way.
Sarah, I meant to share that tip and forgot! Thx. It is helpful for many women when they can’t part with things. Getting rid of things and how to do it is coming up!

I have two rod iron stands, one for earrings one for necklaces. Mine came from Caron’s shop but since the shop is closed I found them on the internet. These work great for me.
Just checked out the Ikea link above concerning the scarf holder, I am off today to get one, thanks
These are great ideas! For scarves, I used a multi-pants hanger and draped them on different rows. Great space saver. But the problem is, it seems like the style for scarves these days is extremely long oblongs, and what I’ve got are some gorgeous silk squares (from the late ’80s/early ’90s!) that I hate to get rid of, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to make them look up-to-date. Ideas?
An inexpensive storage idea for small jewelry pieces is using ice cube trays. I put pairs of earrings, two or three rings or a single necklace in a “cube” and they are easy to see and don’t tangle. If a drawer is deep enough, they can stack, with seasonal items on the lower level.
